The Colour Carnival

Les Gets, France

On top of Mont Chéry mountain, under a blazing blue sky, dancers stomped their splattered ski boots in the snow and threw clouds of colour into the air. Everyone was laughing – their white teeth in stark contrast to their rainbowed faces. A French DJ worked the deck with alchemic skill, at his command his dancing disciples jumped, swayed and threw colour with unanimous cheers. I’d somehow found myself at the Alps’ very own Holi Festival on ice: Les Gets SkiColour carnival.

The energy of the festival was magnetic – like a tribal celebration of life in the mountains. I tried to capture the euphoric faces on my camera, but the images do little justice to the atmosphere of that day…
